Hi there.
Further to the (often vexed) problem of cooling/cylinder head gaskets and such, it might be worth noting that it is essential (in my experience) that the threads for the cylinder head bolts are spotless before tightening. This includes making sure there is no bumf in the bottom of the holes. The head is fragile in the first place, so getting the torque wrong from any thread resistance will cause problems. Also, I recall being told by Sportstune in Edinburgh, who used to do a lot of Imp competition stuff, that skimming the head is a good way to weaken it further. This after I had just taken off 60thou... :(( The compression ratio is already 10/1 as standard, as I recall, so any power gain will cause more problems than benifits, unless you really want to go for it.. So skimming a warped head should be minimal, if it is necessary.

Scott Crearie

Hi Scott, a couple of things have just come to mind. First be aware that there were two completely different lengths of head bolts ( I am not talking about the obvious) but a change in production. I don't know about the UK but we certainly got them here and they used to bottom out in the older engines. They were in the same parts bin under the same parts number and it took a couple of blown gaskets before we worked out what was wrong. Also when you skim a head or block you are reducing the length of the bolt hole and once again it is possible to bottom out. I hope this helps. Darcy

Hello every body, I have owned two Imps in the 60/early 70s with my wife loved them both did the heads on the Imps, fortunately my wives head is still o.k. Just acquired a 1966 super Imp 21000 on the clock, forgotten how noisy they are has any one information on sound insulation as I like to listen to radio 4. Dave. remas@globalnet.co.uk
