Subject: A question about the V5 document.
Hi all,
This question is one that the U.K. members may be able to help me answer:
If I was to buy a car that had been off the road for some years without a V5, from someone who though the owner was not the registered keeper would I be able to get a copy of the V5 in my name as being the new owner and keeper of the car?
This was an question posed to me in the pub last night... How come just because I drive a 30 yr old imp everyone assumes that I can answer every piece of motoring trivia.... (They also seem to think that I can fix every squeek and rumble on their modern blandmobiles)...
Paul.

Hi
There is a form (or at least was) which you could send off to the DVLC to get a new log book for a vehicle if you had lost the original.
To be honest I wouldn't part with any money for something without a V5, but that's just me being paranoid. A copy V5 will prove that you are the registered keeper, but only a receipt will prove that you paid money for the car, and even then, if it's nicked, you could lose it with your only recourse being civil action against the person who sold it to you.
I know what you mean about being expected to know everything though!

Yes - you should be able to get a new V5 - that is unless the DVLA have re-allocated the number plate to another vehicle (this sometimes happens after a cherished transfer off a vehicle! - the DVLA try to allocate a new age related plate - but they normally keep a back log - sometimes they like to ask you for stuff like engine & chassis numbers too!)
Cheers

Paul,
You should, and in fact any one can, get a copy of any V5. Just write to the DVLA. Strange but true!!
