I have a problem with vibrations in my Mark II Super Imp. The problem has been there since I got it in January, but is getting steadily worse and I think it will need fixing soon. The car is very steady up to about 50mph, but just above this speed it suddenly starts to vibrate from the back end. The vibration doesn't get any worse or any better at higher speeds, but as soon as I drop below 50 it disapears again. When I got the car, you could just feel the vibration through the steering, but it has got to the point now that you can feel the whole back end of the car starting to shake.
Before I got the car it had been garaged for about three years, but had been taken out and serviced before being put up for sale. Everything in the car is entirely standard and original.
Does anyone have any ideas about what I should check for first?

Hi Neil, I would look at the rotoflex couplings followed by the universal joints followed by the shock absorbers. If not any of those check for a bent drive shaft and then look for bearing problems. I have just thought of another possible source. Is the nut on the end of the drive shaft tightened to 147lb. I have also seen bent input shafts cause havoc. Hard to check. A final thought would be the engine and gearbox mountings but I would be surprised. Darcy Maddock

Check to see if the tyres have not developed flat spots from sitting in the same position. My friends Super sat for 6 months and this was enough to ruin the tyres (they were old ones!) this gave a terrible vibration over 55mph.
The temporary cure was an extreme rebalance, this will confirm also if it is the tyres!. If it is the tyres, new ones may be the only cure.
