John's bought the Speedy pancake air filters but when he came to fit the rear carb filter the domed bolt heads appear to foul the body work. Is this a problem you had ?

Hi Roger,

No, I never had this problem. I seem to remember it being a bit of a wriggle to tighten the nuts but there is plenty of clearance. you have taken the trumpets off haven't you?

As for the spares list, thats about the size of it.

Slacken the engine mount bolts and give the engine a push to the NS -- the mountings have slotted holes.

Warning If these are wire mesh filter they will rob power and lead to bore wear.

This is beginning to worry me - do you remember the rotoflex spacer washers? They were on the same side of the car. Could it be that somehow the whole RH side has been rebuilt 10mm nearer the transaxle - hence no clearance for doing up the nuts!?!

Hi Andy,

>Wire mesh filters....rob power & lead to bore wear.

I agree that the cheaper pancake filters are not as good as a K&N filter, but they are an improvement over standard 'box' type filters.

If these are the Speedograph filters, they have a foam insert to remove grit etc, and therefore they won't harm your engine. Even the pure wire mesh filters have a degree of filtration to stop airborne particles from damaging the bores. I ran my last Imp Super on a single SU with a cheap Speedograph filter, and we did 12,000 blissfull miles together with no problems from the carb. Everything else broke, but the engine was great..........

Cheers,
Tim

I've just bought a neat little pancake filter made for a beetle. It's about 3 inches high, has a foam insert, has fitting for engine breather tube & was only £10. It fits a 50mm diameter carb. but with a rubber insert goes very nicely onto a standerd solex carb. All in all a good buy - check out your local bug shop! (Sorry - i don't know what make it was & have now thrown the packaging away, it was Tiawanese I think).
Also this shop had trim clips for a Volkswagen which look remarkably like the narrow Chamois ones - I bought one & it is just a little oversize, I'll have a go at it with a stanley knife & let you know how well it fits & how easy it was to change.

These filters are not good enough. For a filter to be effective the carb etc. downstream of the filter should be still clean metal. Any sign of blackness or dirt means the filters are not working. Yes they stop the sand size grains , but it's the much finer particle which causes the wear .. The paper filter is the most effective .
We need good filters considering what the right hand rear wheel throws up at the carbs !

Yes the problem isn't dirt in the carbs but very fine particles causing cylinder bore wear especially on the Imp which has chrome plated piston rings and a rear mounted engine.
