Hi all,
I just want to know what after market EFI kits there are available that will fit an imp. I have just about had my fill of fiddling with Strombergs. I consider fitting webbers at a cost of around £500 to be a little pricey and it seems that with a little thought things could be done a lot better, most importantly eliminating that stupid twin carb setup.
Can you buy combined Spark plugs and injectors, I know this will fill people with horror but it would be a nice solution that would involve no head carving.
How small are the smallest injectors and can I use a dead head and start drilling holes for injectors from a scrap car, if so which car has the most applicable EFI system.
It seems to me that a great deal of the problems involved in imp engine maintenance could be solved with EFI, fuel vaporisation, economy, unleaded petrol conversions(you can't afford to run lean), massive temperature variations in the engine bay due to bad airflow... need I go on.

You have to get together the bits yourself ,
I use the Emerald Cams M3D system .. totaly programmable via a PC ..
Fuel and ignition with temperature compensation to ignition and fuel , and other refinments ,
a lambda probe (oxy sensor) is essential for setting it up though ..

No !
You fit the injectors in a 28/36 DCD manifold ...near the engine for low speed torque or near the 'carb' end for top end power ...

wish i knew , maybe those from the Seat Arosa ?
I would recommend the Bosch K Jetronic system from a Golf , escort , Volvo (up to 1989 )
Nothing to set up , bolt it on and away you go ...i did it in 1984 .. the only disadvantage is that you need to put the battery somewhere else , the airflow meter fits there ...

On the other hand you can't beat the economy and reliability of the standard set-up .. you can always get an Imp going if it stops .. somehow !

Here goes,
If you've got the money then there are a number of ways to inject your Imp. Firstly and the least trouble is to spend £1800 and fit a Weber alpha kit. This comes complete except you will need a manifold, like a twin 40 one. Next you could go for the programmable black box, Emerald system £300 after which you go round scrap yards and pick up hp fuel pump, fuel bar, injectors, various electronic pick ups and to finish a pair of Weber 40's that are well passed it and use these bodies for the butterfly controlled air intakes on you guessed it a twin 40 manifold. Easy eh?

The guys on the DIY_EFI mailing list might be able to help they are very US V8 orientated but might know of a source of smaller injectors for motorcycle conversions.
Just do a web search for DIY_EFI

Three years ago it was £350 for just the ignition part and the upgrade to fuel as well was a further £60 ...

not easy !
What about fuel pick up from the tank ? I had to fit a pre-pump in the tank ..
and the return line has to be fitted , and tank baffles ?
Remember there is no float chamber to store fuel whilst you are cornering enthusiasticly ..
I had 1/2 tank of fuel at Castle Combe Circuit but still got Fuel starvation around the corners , it must have been those Yokohamas ....
Would you drill out a weber DCOE throttle barrel to fit an injector ? Too valuable ! and they don't wear out ...
where would you fit a water temp sensor ?
A new wiring Loom would have to be made for the Injection ..
Lots to think about ..

Nick,
I certainly wouldn't but the man asked the question. It did make good reading in the triple c article though and it came across as a very cheap conversion with the exception of the Emerald box.
