Cold Imp !
Are there any need for the bypass hose?? I canīt see any. It take ages for the hot engine water to reach the front of the car and the heater matrix. Why ? Everything goes throw the bypass hose??
Are there anyone out there in the cold night, who have managed to get better heating in the Imp?

Hi Kristian
Yes there is need for the bypass hose. You need it especially when heater is OFF, because the thermostat is sometimes closed, so water circulation is intermittent. During these times, valve seats overheat. When I had a side-valve Minx (until 1969!) it was built with no bypass. Fitting a heater resulted in about 50% increase in exhaust valve life. I am sure a permanent bypass would do one of these oldtimers even better. (Earlier models were thermosyphon and so had no thermostat or water pump. Adding the 'stat and pump in 1950, but without bypass, didn't really solve their valve-life problems.)
Proper Scandinavian versions had a bigger heater matrix. The standard one is a bit excessive for NZ. Good luck

Yes Gary I have heard something like what you are saying. (I accept it for the time beeing.) So in wintertime the heater is always ON and it is no problem and in summertime, start engine with heater ON = exit bypass!

Starting the car with the heater on, or turning it on very soon after starting will take it longer to warm up.

Hi Kristian,
My heater doesn't work in the cold very well either, but that is partly due to a lower degree thermostat.
What I usually do is put a piece of cardboard in front of the waterpump air intake and so blank off part of it. I clamp it with a pair of clips to the red plastic housing it works fine, and is easy to remove. As you have a "home market" Imp maybe you can get a export heater matrix which is bigger.
Another idea maybe to insulate the pipes going to and from the heater so the hot water will stay hotter when it arrives in the matrix. You can buy the stuff which they use to insulate central heating pipes and water pipes with.
Hope this helps
