Subject: Engine Oil?
Can anyone suggest a good engine oil for a newly rebuilt engine for using as it's being run in? The manual doesn't mention anything special so far as I can see, so I was planning on just using a good 15w/50 oil (Duckhams maybe?).
PS. Does anyone want a bonnet? It is slightly dented, has some surface rust, but has no rust holes on the outer surface. Free to anyone who'll collect it. If no interest, I'll be scrapping it in a few weeks.

Mark,
Whereabouts are you ? Wouldn't want you to scrap a good bonnet - if it's near enough to have a look at.

I think that Valvoline Racing 20/50w is top Oil.

I live in the medway towns, Kent (England). I'll be happy to keep the bonnet for as long as needs be if it is any use to anyone. As I said, the outer skin is hole free, but there are holes in one of the struts underneath it at a rear corner (I can't remember which) and the strut which runs along the front of the bonnet has seperated from the outer skin in parts, so it's not that good!

Maybe using a modern expensive oil will prevent a rebuilt Imp engine from running in properly.

Hi Mark
Whilst running, don't use TOO good an oil - for new vehicles, not better than SD rating seems a common recommendation. With SG it might never run in properly.

Mark,
You're too far from me then - I'm in Northumberland.
But good bonnets are getting very hard to find. Even if yours is not so good perhaps it would be of use to someone. Perhaps you could contact your local area centre in case they know of anyone who might be interested.
Cheers,
Anne

Anne,
I'll hang on to it for the moment then. It's difficult to know what to throw away and what not to after doing up a car. I have a few other bits which might be useful to people - I'll let everyone know what they are once I've tidied up!
Thank you all very much for your comments on oil - I'm now using a reasonably cheap 20/50 oil for the first 500 miles, and taking it VERY slow to begin with - it's amazing what a long tail back you can cause if you work at it! :->

Mark,
So you've rebuilt an Imp ? Tell us all about it.
What model is it ? How much work did you have to do ? How long did it take you ? Will we see it in St. Andrews in August ?
I'm sure we'd all love to hear about you car.

If the engine has the chrome top ring as originally fitted, then slow running in will not bed it in properly. If the cylinders were not rebored then all that is needed is find a nice long moderate slope hill and go up it at 30mph in top gear and full throttle a couple of times.
Subsequently do not high rev the motor for 500mile or so, otherwise drive normally.
