A few of us from the North East of England attended the Scottish Built show at The Museum of Flight at East Fortune in Scotland yesterday. This show was for any vehicle - car, motorbike, cycle, etc - which was built in Scotland.
There was a specific class for Linwood built vehicles - this included a number of Imps, a Clan (a bit of a cheat perhaps ?) and a Volvo (P100 ?). Apparently the body shells for the Volvo were built by Pressed Steel at Linwood.
We obviously made a good decision travelling north as most of the country had non-stop rain but it was actually dry for most of day at East Fortune. It was however, cold enough for November not June.
It wasn't the biggest car show I've ever seen but there were a number of interesting vehicles there including a 1897 steam driven tri-cycle and the ice-cream van was a converted Rolls Royce! The museum has a number of hangers containing displays of planes and other flight related memorabilia. The POTENT imp was also on display complete with antlers.
Perhaps the highlight of the day was the fact that Jim Pollard, the former Quality manager at Linwood, was there to judge the cars in the Linwood class. Mr Pollard was accompanied by his son who had been the first apprentice employed at Linwood at the age of 16. Mr Pollard Jnr was particularly interesting to talk to and told us that he is currently restoring an Imp which he hopes to bring to St. Andrews for National.
The prizes had been donated by some of the events sponsors and Derek Baty won a handsome glass paperweight with his Singer Chamois. In addition all entrants received a 'goody bag' containing 'Scottish' products such as whisky and Highland Toffee.
All in all a good day was had by all and could only have been improved by some warmer weather.
Cheers,
Anne

Hi Anne,
Sounds like a really interesting day. Its a pity that Western Australia is so far away from these events.
IT would be really great to attend a few of the shows and Club events, maybe one day I will get there!
Regards,
Paul Greville.

The early Volvo P1800 Sports car ( The Saint Drove one ! ) was assembled in UK by Jensen around 1962 until the production was transferred to Sweden ...

Hi all
The last car from the former Todd factory in NZ (Mitsubishi since late '80s) will be a Mitsi Galant, and will roll out this Friday. So ends another link to Imp production history...

Subject: Sunbeam/Rootes factories
I've finished posting my photographs of Sunbeam and Rootes factories from my recent trip to the UK. The URL is
http://www.petrie.starway.net.au/~sunbeam/factories.
I would be interested in a bit of feedback on this. I'm a bit concerned about download time, particularly since most of you are on the other side of the world. I've posted the pictures relating to each factory on a single page so it's easier to make comparisons. I've also tried to avoid making the photos too small so you can see some detail.
The trade off is that it could take forever to download to your computer.
So, if you think I should make the pictures smaller and/or spill them over more pages, let me know!

Hi Russ,
Great pictures !!
Downloading is acceptable a few minutes for each page. You've seen a lot around Britain in your holiday. Especially interesting was the wolverhampton part, sunbeam land and aero engine factory.
I've been in Old Warden (Shuttleworth collection) where they have pictures of airships with Sunbeam engines (1924?) I see you got the Gordon Champ Sunbeam bike books as well !
I'm on the lookout for a Sunbeam bike, what would the best place be to look ? (I mean bicycle not motorbike although ... temping tempting !!)
Kind Regards Bert

I don't really know where to suggest, although I'm sure they're around. When I visited Mike Scott in Aberdeen, he took me to the Grampian Transport Museum where they had a Sunbeam bicycle.
This is a great little museum incidentally. Being an Aussie, I loved the 1930's Sunbeam ute (pick-up).
