Hi Mike and others,
Didn't they use the so called oil bath air filter on the Imp in dusty countries ?
Here in Holland I've seen an Imp with one of those still on, not of much use overhere but nevertheless interesting to see.
I believe they are also in the Rootes parts list.
Cheers Bert

dunno.... I've seen them referred to in the manual as an alternative, but never in real life.

Subject: Oil Bath Filters?
Hi All
I have heard this term before, but what does Oil Bath filter mean.
BTW, I have fitted my assistant front rad, alias my heater matrix relocated in the front airbox. Results have been excellent so far. It took 15 mins of driving at 40-50mph before the electric fan cut in, after that point, when the thermostat opened there wasn't sufficient desire for much coolant to flow round the front rad and therefore had little effect.
I intend to block the bypass pipe and reroute the coolant to flow from cylinder head to manifold and then around to the front heater and back to the Y valve. The only problem with this is that I will get very slow warm up times, any ideas on how I could limit the cooling at low temps bearing in mind that I have a two stage electric fan and therefore a way of providing an electrical current when cooling is required, perhaps some kind of electric bypass around the front rad?

It's a contraption where the dirt is cleaned out of the air with help of the oil inside.
I've never taken one apart but I think it works a bit like the metal gauze air filters which you have to dip into the oil plus the effect that heavier particles will be trapped in the oil by the centrifugal force.
It was supposed to be more easy as you can clean them again. I wonder what would happen with the carb after a while with all that oil some will be sucked in I suppose.
So has anybody of you from down-under ever seen such a thing on the Imps overthere ?

Hi Bert
The AC oil-bath filter was used for many years - my sv Humber 10 (= Minx 1952) had one. The paper ones were a new costly innovation of the 60s! ($10 element instead of 1/2 pint of used engine oil). By 1964 the oil-bath type were gone from NZ production.

Hi Dave
A b-i-g concentric can, with air coming high in the side, through a wodge of gauze which has its bottom resting in a small puddle of oil, thence to the centre tube & on to the carb. via a double-elbow pipe out the top.
Cheers

Hi Bert,
Over the time of my involvement with Imps (59 of them) I have only seen one vehicle fitted with the oil bath air filter.
