Subject: Alloy wheels for Stilettos.
Hello everyone,
I am 17 years old and I am on the brink of getting an electric blue Sunbeam Stiletto on the road. However, I am not satisfied with my wheel trims and tyres and would like to purchase some alloy wheels and brand new chunky tyres.
Can anyone advise me on which alloys/tyres will look good on the car, where I can get them from, the dimensions of the tyres/alloys and an approximate price range.
I appreciate any advice,
John Hawes, Bristol.

Well as you are starting fresh on the wheels try to get the rear ones with an off-set to allow the wheel to be positioned 1 inch further out , this will increase stability at the rear and look better .
'Superlight' alloy wheels look right on the Stiletto ..
Size ? Rear 6 x 13 front 5 1/2 x 13 ! if you want the ultimate tyres ( in my opinion ) go for the Yokohama AVS 175/60 x 13 they just do NOT let go !
Demon Tweeks in the UK are very helpful and seem to know the Imp offsets .. the 13" wheels will allow room for disc brakes in the future , you don't want to have to change wheels again if you decide on a disc conversion !
Are you going to Longleat on Saturday , the hillclimb ? Plenty of Davrians and a Clan or two and maybe an Imp even i hope !

Hi John
Make sure the 'backset' figure is appropriate - seldom published! On your existing rims, it will be stamped about where the outer diameter of a standard hubcap (nave-plate to you UK folks, in honour of the (k)naves who pinch them) goes. the stamping will go something like 4.5Jx12x38, where 38 is the backset in mm. (Sorry, I don't have 4.5J rims on my Mk1 so don't know trhe correct figure. 38 mm is for an Avenger; when fitted with wheels of greater backset it became a real pig to drive.)
Cheers

And how come you didn't get the response _I_ got when trying to buy 175 x 12s - "No such size, madam". Got some in the end, for my Nymph. But only paid £25 plus balancing each. . . You see, I have a daughter with a student loan :-)

I have also used Bridgestone 175/70/12 on my race car RE61S best tyre I have tried but for competition use only or dry weather - fat chance in UK or even here in Bangkok.

Andy

Hi Greg
I don't know the exact size offhand, but I'm sure that any engineering-supply firm could supply you O-rings at just about any size, for about 10p each. If you're on a student loan, two full overhaul kits at 9 quid a pop might upset the budget...still a good idea sometime though.
Good luck

You can get the follow makes in 12" 175/70's: Camac and Bridgestone but you have to hunt for them and not go to your average Kit fit place. It would be best to find a good independent tyre supplier.
A good modern 12" is the 165/70 made by Hankook and Yokohama these last ages and are well worth the money the hankooks are especially well priced.
For the next week I will be off the coollist (all sigh with relief) as I am going to be a student again in Bournemouth !!
my temp email is S_Trickett@yahoo.com
will mail you all soon
bye
Ps I think I mite spend some of next week burning up and down the road outside George Hartwells
