Hi People
I have just found a sport cam. I know the cam carrier has to have a bit taken off the tops for this cam to work, does any other moderfication need to be done?
I was told that the valves are either longer or shorter in the sport models, is this true? (I know the valves are bigger in sport heads)

All I am asking is, can you put the cam straight into a standard mk2 head (with the cam carrier mod)????

Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,

Simple answer yes.

You should fit uprated valve springs (either Terry heavy duty, or the Imp Sport double valve springs), but the difference in clearances should not be a problem.

I hope that helps,

Hi Kenneth, Tim

Don't the seal-covers & seals on the inlet stems have to disappear? (and hence the need for the head-drain pipe)

Cheers

I have done it with a friends std mk2. We didn't worry overly about the oil seals - maybe it will catch up with us ?? The valve clearances just needed adjusting with new shims, we used some from a peugeot 309 (I think) We had the sports cam carrier as well.

Hi Gary,

>don't the seals have to go

No, if you use the standard valve springs, the oil seals can remain. I believe that you can use the seals with the Terry springs too. The double valve springs will foul.....

I've checked the Millington book, and it says that you can use standard valve springs with the sport cam, so my last reply was not quite accurate (sorry- my excuse is, I've got concussion following an accident so the world is spinning gently at the mo!!).

Cheers,
Tim

Tim-
When I rebuilt my Sport head I chose to retain the valve stem seals. The shroud holds the seal to the top of the valve guide. With double valve springs the shroud will foul the inner spring, so if you want to keep the seals you will need to leave out the inner springs. I am quite happy with single springs as I do not drive hard enough to warrant the others. A Sport engine without seals will smoke at the exhaust even though the oil return pipe to the sump is there to reduce the large volume of oil always present in the cam cover.
Hope this helps.

Hi Guys,

Re this oil seal business......

There must be another type of seal that could be fitted when the double springs are used, such as the little top hats used in the A series? Any ideas?

Although I agree that a Sport uses a bit more oil than a standard car, they don't smoke much unless something is worn out.

Cheers,
Tim

Yes , those M**I seals !

Ian Carter fitted some AND double valve springs , i think that is a major contribution to my 930 using no oil !
The top of the valve guide needs a minor machining job to fit them ...
