One of the gentlemen who helped to set up the Linwood factory - Alan Lane - now lives in Victoria, Australia.
He joined Rootes in 1961 - from Associated Industrial Consultants - and sourced the tooling and machines from Bavaria, etc.
He had some interesting stories to tell - such as the day that the Duke of Edinburgh visited... apparently an electric fault stopped the line working, an employee had to hold two wires together to keep it running. Employees also had to keep driving the same cars around for the newsreels (as unfortunately not enough of them were working!)
I have posted a photo of him for your interest.
I also have the brochure for the "Official Opening of the Linwood Factory of Rootes (Scotland) Limited by His Royal Highness THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH KG, KT on Thursday 2nd May 1963"... and can post photos /scans of the pages if anyone is interested - it includes the seating plan and who was actually invited!
Alan spoke of an Edward Vaughan - test driver - with some fond & funny memories. I am not sure that his has e-mail / internet - is there a phone number that I could pass on?
By December 1962 all the offices, canteens and the rest was ready, too.
