Although Jon Lloyd acquitted himself well in the South West stages, his nearest rival was just four places and 48 seconds behind him, finishing 15th overall. Dave Vandervlist (28), oddly seeded down at number 49, was always in contention with his 998cc Imp, as usual running Free Film Service sponsorship, having made the trip from his home in Bracknell, Berks.
He tackled the Bass Charrington in the same 998 Chrysler Imp, still backed by Free Film Service of Maidenhead. He had a mediocre day and finished 4th in class (some 2½ minutes behind no. 3), 47th overall. The two (three?) points were enough to keep him in contention for the overall championship.
