LWK 700F

While the date of registration number LWK 700F is 1967 (in Coventry), Ken Dunkley has sources that say this Imp was first registered by Rootes Ltd. in 1968. It dates from January 1968 (?).

It was used by Cowan / Coyle in the Scottish Rally of 1968. (source?)
There is a source that says "Cowan in LKW 700F had an accident and retired."

(July 1977, but which magazine? CCC?) Robin Eyre-Maunsell from Belfast. Robin's firm, A.S. Baird Ltd, have a stable of three reliable Imps: two Group 6 cars - FRW and LWK 700F, and a Group 2 car WYH 934H. LWK met its Waterloo at Lock Eck-side on this year's Scottish, thus providing Austin Frazer (sic) with yet another exciting chapter in his Rallying book, and is currently being rebuilt.

Rally Retro shows a photo of LWK 700F driven by Robin Eyre Maunsell in the 1971 Manx International Rally with competition no. 16. (Sponsored by Finch Hill Motors; using Dunlop tyres on Minilites. Also what looks like a heated windscreen.)
It has had an accident and the left headlamp is no more. As 'Imper' (Ken Dunkley?) notes on The Imp Club forum: "the damage is limited to the front outer wing, so the front box section strengethening did its job. Most normal Imps would have retired on the spot after a similar impact. And I believe the lighting is down to a five light front panel after its skirmish".

'Imper' calls LWK 700F "the penultimate works imp (the one before ALN 650H) running as a quasi Chrylser UK main dealer car", but gets a different view on this from 'rje' (John?).
'Rje' goes on to write: "did you know it is the only Imp (other than 8305 KV) ever to have led an International overall - after Tony Fall retired his Works Cooper S from the lead of the 1969 TAP, Robin Maunsell in LWK was 1st O/A but the car was eating its alloy pulleys, Robin was too tired to notice and eventually it died."

John Gadsby writes on The Imp Club forum: "I have some pictures of LWK700F before being restored and in its full 1970 spec. ".

"LWK 700 F was last used by the factory on the scottish rally in 1968. Then bought by Robin Maunsell, who very nearly won the TAP in 1970 outright in it. When Robin moved on to Avengers he gave it to Des O'Dell's son and it was repainted in dealer team colours. It eventually was found in Leicester (I think) and restored by Duncan Kirk in a somewhat unoriginal way. It was sold and at one stage ended up for sale again in Paul Matty sportscars. It was then bought by club member Ken Dunkley who lives somewhere near Stevenage. It appeared at Colin Malkin's funeral I am pretty sure."
