Place the car on a ramp and disconnect the battery.
Remove the top cover assembly complete from the carburettor. Alternatively remove the carburettor complete, if more convenient.
Note the cover position and marking, so that it is subsequently refitted correctly; now remove the bi-metal coil and cover assembly and the gasket (if fitted) from the top cover.
Drill a 5/64 in. (2 mm.) hole in the cover casing. The position and angle of this hole is critical. Every care should be taken to ensure accuracy, proceed as follows :-
Carefully mark the position of the hole and first, drill a 1/16 in. (1.5 mm. or No. 53 drill) diameter pilot hole, angling it upwards as shown in Fig. 1. Secondly, temporarily assemble the cover collar and the abutment bracket complete with the cable clamp to the top cover. Now, using the clamp as a guide, enlarge the 1/16 in. pilot hole to 5/64 in. (2 mm.)
After drilling, remove any burrs and thoroughly clean the top cover to remove swarf; blow out all air passages in both directions.
With the cover collar and abutment bracket still assembled, refit the top cover assembly to the carburettor, or refit the carburettor. Do not refit the bi-metal coil and cover at this stage.
Remove the rear seat and sound insulation. Drill the four 1/2 in. (13 mm.) diameter holes in the seat pan at A, B, C, D and later at E.
Adjust the height of the ramp and, working from above and below, fit the outer cable and grommets, as shown at positions A, B, C and D.
From underneath the car drill hole E in the rear bulkhead panel in the position shown in Fig. 4. Hole X already exists and on certain models will carry the pneumatic throttle tube. Fit the grommet and pass the cable through hole E.
Using Seelastik (or similar compound) seal the cable and grommet at hole D.
Fit the cable to the bracket and secure with the clip, screw, nut and washer. Adjust the cable to provide a smooth run avoiding sharp bends.
Attach the cable at the wheel arch with a clip and screw in order to prevent rattle.
Clamp the outer cable to the abutment bracket; fit the inner cable and lead it through the 5/64 in. hole in the top cover assembly.
Fit the trunnion to the inner cable as shown in Fig. 3 and check operation of the choke override. When the knob is pushed right in, the trunnion should push the choke vacuum piston connecting link fully back, so that the choke valve is in the fully open position.
Check by repeated operation that the movement is free and that the trunnion does not foul the fast idle stepcam.
Adjust the length of the inner cable so that the control knob is fully in when the choke is fully open.
Carefully remove the crews securing the abutment bracket and cover collar and, without disturbing the trunnion; refit the bi-metal coil, cover and gasket (if fitted). Refit the collar and abutment bracket and adjust the cover to its original position by re-aligning the markings.
If necessary refer to the Workshop Manual, WSM.141 Section C.
Recheck for freedom of movement, reconnect battery, start clock (if fitted) and test equipment.
