Cylinder Head Removal
- Disconnect and remove battery
- Remove air filter, accelerator cable or air pipe (if pneumatic) and choke cable if a non-automatic choke
- Remove fuel feed pipe from outlet side of fuel pump
- Pull off distributor vacuum pipe at union on carburettor base and unbolt retaining clip from front of cambox cover
- Undo exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and separate.
- Unscrew and remove nuts and washers which retain carburettor to manifold flange
- Lift carburettor out of engine compartment
NB 1. Check number and thickness of gaskets fitted.
- Remove radiator cap
- Undo radiator and engine drain taps and drain coolant into suitable container (1½ galls)
- Remove fuel pump nuts and washers and lodge pump out of working area.
NB 2. Number and thickness of washers control fuel delivery pressure
- Remove oil filler breather tube, where fitted and sparking plug leads after first numbering them.
At this point you have removed all the bits and pieces which will get in the way of actual
cylinder head removal.
If you feel like having a break, this would be the time.
Next stage:
- Remove all nuts from cambox cover and lift off
- Knock back tab washer on the end of camshaft driving sprocket and remove retaining bolt
- Remove sprocket and hang chain over side of casing, extract dowel from camshaft flange and store in safe place for reuse later.
- Undo half turn at a time in sequence shown (fig.2) the eight nuts holding camshaft carrier to cylinder head and lift off, at the same time inverting it. The tappet shims and or pistons may stay on top of the valves, if this does happen they must be returned into the bore of the camshaft carrier from which they came
- Remove nuts (X), then half turn at a time undo the ten cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence to that shown (fig.1) and remove them.
- Tap cylinder head with plastic or wooden mallet to break the joint between head and engine.
- When cylinder head is free, lift it out onto the bench.
